KR to provide cyber assistance to Songa

Songa Shipmanagement has reached an agreement with the Korean Register (KR) for the provision of specialist cyber security technical services to its fleet of 32 ships.

Teekay is to implement an improved vessel e-mail system across its 160-strong fleet, following the agreement of a new contract with Norwegian maritime IT company Dualog, the companies report.

GT Maritime in malware protection partnership

GT Maritime has agreed a deal with network-based malware protection specialists Lastline Inc to incorporate its cyber security technologies into the GTMailPlus vessel communication software system.

Cyber security company Naval Dome reports that it has completed pilot testing of a cyber defence system for Lloyd’s Register (LR) aboard XT Shipping’s 4,300 TEU container ship Zim Genova. The vessel was operational during the tests, which were supervised by the classification society and ECDIS provider Totem Plus.

Israel-based security company Naval Dome has reported the results of a series of penetration tests on maritime technology systems, including an ECDIS, which allowed its ethical hackers to directly impact on board systems.

Navarino has joined the CSO Alliance, to assist in promoting cyber awareness in the maritime sector and support the development of the CSO maritime cyber-crime reporting portal.

Clarksons confirms cyber breach

UK-based shipping services company Clarksons has emerged as the latest maritime business to be hit by a cyber-attack, with the company confirming that it had suffered a breach involving unauthorised access to its computer systems.

Totem Plus reports that it has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with security company Naval Dome to add a cyber defence system as a supplemental option to its PC-based navigation and automation systems.

Examination of emerging technologies, autonomous vessels and cyber security must form an integral part of IMO’s strategic approach to the next five years, said secretary-general Kitack Lim in his opening address at the IMO’s 30th Assembly session as he outlined the key elements of the new ‘Strategic Plan for the Organization’ for the 2018 to 2023 period.

Cyber security, alongside carbon emissions and safety, was identified as one of the top line agenda issues for the recently concluded annual Tripartite Shipbuilding Forum, supported by a range of shipping organisations including BIMCO, ICS, INTERTANKO, OCIMF, and IACS.
